Fairwinds Technologies and AST SpaceMobile have shown how a dedicated Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation supporting direct broadband connectivity to unmodified/standard COTS 4G LTE and 5G devices can provide advantaged, dedicated access enabling military users with alternative communication path options.
The AST SpaceMobile satellites can provide increased, dedicated path diversity options for mobile military users enabling increased end-to-end broadband communications availability and resiliency against different threat environments.
LEO-based communication systems are a viable alternative solution with acceptable quality of service (QoS) compared to other terrestrial-based communication systems (i.e., tactical radios).
AST satellites support cellular spectrum of 690-960 MHz and 1.5-2.2 GHz.
Initial testing will be available in the later part of 2024 with increased service offerings throughout 2025-2026.
Use cases supported by AST SpaceMobile’s satellite architecture provides opportunity for secure 5G communications and ISR.
